Binding Cutting Aids

Cutting the back binding at the heel has always been difficult for me.  It’s tough to get it perfectly square and matched up with the other end.  I always had to dick around cutting it a little long and tediously shortening it with files and sanding sticks.  This jig uses an X-acto razor saw and has simplified the process considerably.  You have to make one for each binding size but that’s easy.

Set up to make the cut.  A mini miter box

Cut made.

The plastic backing is thin but protects the top of the guitar when cutting the miter at the heel purfling to match up with the back strip.  You can creep up on the length.  It still allows you to see the reflection in the chisel.  You can use it for free cutting purfling as well prior to placing it on the instrument.

You can also use the same concept to stabilize small purfling while cutting miters
